What is binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder is defined by consuming a lot of food quickly and feeling like you can’t control. If you do this at least once a week for at least three months at a time, you may have BED.

During a binge, people often feel out of control, like they can’t stop themselves from continuing to eat even if they’re full or want to stop. Since BED satisfies a compulsion to eat, there is a sense of relief from this eating, but it is often followed by guilt, shame, or frustration over the act.

Signs of BED include:

Recurrent binge eating episodes consuming a large amount of food in a short period of time
A lack of control over what and how much food is being eaten
The binges occur once per week for 3 months at minimum
The binges are not followed by purging behaviors like in bulimia nervosa

Those with BED struggle with eating rapidly, even if they’re not hungry, past the point of discomfort. They often eat alone due to a sense of shame over their lack of control. The distress or frustration after a binge may lead to a stretch of excessive food restriction, creating a harsh binge-restrict cycle.

Causes of Binge Eating Disorder

The cause of BED isn’t always clear and is often a combination of factors. There is a genetic component, for those with a family history of eating disorders are at much higher risk of developing one themselves. There is actually a gene associated with binge eating.

Binge eating is often an emotional act that may result from stress, boredom, or sadness. These negative emotions may cause you to reach for dopamine-producing foods – ultra-processed, salty, high-fat, and/or sugary snacks.
