Background

Hi there! I’m Alyssa, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. While most dietitians start their training in adulthood, mine began in childhood. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2, which means I was carb counting long before I could even spell carbohydrate. Not exactly the childhood hobby I would’ve chosen, but it set the stage for the work I now love.

I've come to see the positive in my diagnosis, but this perspective took time. For many years, I just felt lost, frustrated, and alone. But it was this experience which led me to dedicate my life to being the resource, cheerleader, and problem-solver I always wished I had.

Alongside my personal experience and formal education, I have over a decade of clinical experience. Although diabetes care has always been a huge passion of mine and much of my work has centered around it, my background extends beyond diabetes. I've also worked in a cancer center and cardiac rehab facility. That said, I feel well equipped to help people struggling with cancer and heart related conditions as well. Other areas of focus include prediabetes and chronic kidney disease, since these can often overlap with some of the other conditions mentioned.

At the end of the day, I believe in empowering people to make nutrition/health decisions for themselves. Instead of providing strict meal plans, I focus on equipping you with the knowledge and skills needed to promote independence and flexibility. I will teach you how to manage real life situations - whether that be navigating the grocery store or special occasions. Together, we will develop a personalized plan solid enough to withstand the unpredictability of life.

Approach

Living with a chronic condition myself, I can relate to the ups, downs, the detours, & the “well, that didn’t go as planned” moments. That perspective guides my empathetic, down-to-earth approach which is tailored to you and built for real life (& the plot twists that often come with it).

When life throws curveballs, I like to incorporate creative problem solving, silver linings, & respectful humor. Ultimately, I want you to feel understood, empowered, & confident in managing your nutrition.
