Expectations: I am a self-proclaimed science nerd, which means I love to dig deep into the research surrounding nutritional science before I make any recommendations. At the same time, I recognize that the lay person needs simple nuggets of truth, so I strive to distil down the facts to make the information practical and easier to implement. My philosophy is a collaborative approach to empower my patients with the “why” or the science behind behavior change along with the “how”, the actual means to bring about that change by helping them assess barriers to change. Once we have laid down the “foundation of education", patients can expect handouts with succinct, clear-cut guidelines on making informed food choices and personalized meal plans based upon the clinical history, labs, cultural and food preferences. • Focus areas: explain what areas you focus on as a dietitian and help potential clients figure out if they are a good fit to work with you. As a certified diabetes care and education specialist, I have almost 2 decades of experience in this field. I provide patients with the tools to prevent the progression of prediabetes to diabetes and the skillful management of diabetes if/when it manifests. I have a consistent track record of helping patients achieve their therapeutic goals ranging from optimizing blood sugars, blood pressure, blood lipids and liver and kidney function tests to name but a few. Other areas of expertise include the gut microbiome, nutrition and cognition, Intermittent fasting (is it a fast or just a fad?..), the South Asian diet and plant-based diets. • Credentials: this can include your academic qualifications, years of experience, or awards received. I have a master’s degree in nutrition education, and 2 bachelor’s degrees, one in microbiology and the other in food and nutrition respectively. I am also a certified diabetes care and education specialist. • Get to know me: what else do you want clients to know about you? I have a positive outlook on life and try to see the best in everyone. I am passionate about nutrition and give talks at professional meetings and in the community on a regular basis, • Personals: this is something personal about you to show you're human. It can be a relevant hobby, information about your family, and/or a fun fact about yourself. This enables the client to make a personal connection with you. We love to travel together and take vacations as a family. I cook many of my meals from scratch. I love to sing more than I like to dance but have choreographed dances in the past. I am a blogger and recipe developer, albeit my blog has been neglected for the last couple of years because life happens. You can find my blog here https://webdietitian.wordpress.com/. • Drive: this is why you decided to become an RD and build a private practice. We are all familiar with the expression “you are what you eat”. I would like to add that “you are also what you don’t eat”. When one’s diet is predominantly high in manufactured food, this can potentially displace the more nourishing, nutrient packed foods that are healing to the body. Today’s food choices are a far cry from the wholesome, healing foods of our ancestral diet, and given how intricately this ties to our health, I felt a compulsion to learn more about the science of nutrition, and then disseminate this knowledge to others.
