Mariafelix Gonzalez was born in Mexico in the border town of Tijuana where she started her journey learning English and becoming familiar with the culture of the United States (U.S.). After graduating high school she immigrated to the US where she started working for the Women, Infant and Children program (WIC) followed by the start of formal education in nutrition at Bakersfield College culminating with a Master's degree in Human Nutrition.
